How does Coumadin / Warfarin Sodium work ?
Mechanism of Action
Warfarin is exposed to interfere with clotting factor synthesis by
inhibition of Vitamin k dependant clotting factor, thereby reducing the
regeneration of vitamin K1 epoxide. The degree of suppression is
dependent upon the dosage given. Therapeutic doses of Warfarin
decrease the total amount of the active form of each vitamin K
dependent clotting factor made by the liver. This treatment was
developed by Bristol Myers Squibb. Approved by the FDA, Warfarin Sodium
has since then become famous.
