The patient should set a date to stop smoking, Chantix dosing of 0.5mg capsules from the starting pack should start 1-2 weeks before this. This lets Chantix (Varenicline) build up in the body. Smoking can continue during this time but try and stop smoking on the chosen quit date. On this date change the dosage to 1mg from the continuing month pack, see dosage details below:
Dosage
Days 1 – 3: 0.5 mg once daily - Days 4 – 7: 0.5 mg twice daily
Day 8 – To the end of treatment: 1 mg twice daily
Chantix tablets should be swallowed whole with water with or without food. Patients should be treated with Chantix for 12 weeks. Patients who have successfully stopped smoking at the end of 12 weeks, can pass an additional course of 12 weeks treatment with 1 mg twice daily.
Side Effects of Chantix: This medication is generally well tolerated, common side effects are:
nausea, changes in dreaming, constipation, gas and/or vomiting.
This Medication is for adults - persons under 18 years should not take it. Do not take this medicationwithout your doctors advice especially if you have kidney problems or receive dialysis.
