Capoten tablets contain the active ingredient Captopril, which is a type of medicine called an ACE inhibitor.  As captopril blocks the action of ACE, it reduces the production of angiotensin II. This means that the blood vessels are allowed to relax and widen.

Captopril has also been shown to improve survival following a heart attack and to help prevent heart failure in people with a weak heart after suffering a heart attack.

Captopril has an additive effect with other medicines that decrease blood pressure, particularly other medicines used to treat high blood pressure (antihypertensives). In people taking antihypertensive medicines it may cause a large drop in blood pressure with the first dose.
Captopril is used alone or in combination with other drugs for the treatment of high blood pressure and heart failure. Captopril also is used for improving survival and preventing heart failure and hospitalizations for heart failure after a heart attack.
